Serotonin is the chemical in your brain that makes you happy. People with a lot of it tend to be happier while people who do not have much tend to be depressed.
Along with serotonin there are chemicals such as endorphins and the neurotransmitter GABA which helps us to relax. Tryptophan, which is a precursor amino acid to serotonin, is thought to improve mood, and can be found in bananas, turkey, milk, chickpeas and chicken. Endorphins, which are released after eating dark chocolate and after working out, are thought to improve mood as well. Mood chemistry at this point is poorly understood as is the field of mental health in general.
