There are generally three in the chemical make up – that gives you the three numbers on the box with multi purpose being a 16-16-16 mix of nitrogen, phosphate, and potash with each at 16% of the total makeup. All of these promote growth but most fertilizers have a high nitrogen component that promote a healthy soil versus a healthy plant.

Chemical fertilizers contain three chemicals: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Nitrogen helps plants with leaf growth. More specifically, it helps the plant produce greener, lusher leaves. The phosphorous aids the plant in increasing fruit development and in producing a strong root system. “Potassium is used by plants for flower color and size. It is also important to the strength of the plant.”
