The amorphous solar cell is certainly the cheapest type of solar cell. It also happens to produce the least amount of power. This isn’t a problem though considering that amorphous solar cells are typically only used in calculators and garden lamps. The technology is getting better, and as its power capabilities increase so will its use.
Another good cheap type of solar cell is the dye-sensitised solar cell, due to the fact that it’s made from cheap materials and doesn’t require much to manufacture. Though it’s performance isn’t as great as the better thin-film varieties, it’s cheap price still makes it in high demand.
It’s creator, Michael Gratzel, won the 2010 Millenium Technology Prize for their invention.
