Most major automobile companies do not currently have any EVs (electric vehicles) on the market, although Chevy should be offering their competitive hybrid (Volt) later this year for $35,000, and Nissan has committed to putting their first completely electric vehicle (Leaf, priced at $32,780), in showrooms by fall 2010. Both of these cars will be eligible for the current DOE $7,500 tax credit.
However, there is an alternative market for electric cars in America, consisting of DIY, independent car manufacturing companies, and freelance mechanics who can overhaul certain gas-powered cars and convert them to run electric.
