Scientists have stated that atmospheric and arctic warming are causing sea ice to melt. There was a study done in 2010 that investigated the level of the atmospheric warming and findings showed that the warming was occurring with high concentrations in the lower atmosphere. It was this finding that provided the link between atmospheric warming and the melting of the sea ice (Watts, 2010).
