What is causing the rising levels of methane in the atmosphere?

One suspected cause is that northern wetlands have been warmer than usual, causing more methane gas to be released into the air from those areas than normal. Another cause is increasing amounts of food waste. In landfills, this waste breaks down and releases methane gas. Other common causes include animal waste and coal mining.
