The main cause of animal deaths and species extinctions in recent times is habitat loss. Humans are not only creating more pollution, but are destroying natural habitat for homes, agriculture, and businesses. Because of habitat destruction or the reduction of sizes of ecosystems, less and less diversity and life can be supported. Habitat loss also causes fragmentation, meaning species get separated and either cannot find organisms in their own species to reproduce with, or there are too few species in a reproductive pool to maintain healthy genetic diversity.
