Biodiversity can be negatively effected by several factors. If a non-native species is introduced, it can become not only another source of competition for food, but also an unchecked predator, which can result in its prey being wiped out. One source claims that non-native species have played a role in half of the extinctions recorded since 1600. Other events that can damage the biodiversity of an ecosystem are the loss of a keystone species, pollution, over hunting, climate change, and habitat loss.
