Ocean waves are proportional to the amount of wind – its velocity, amount of time of blowing, and the reach – the amount of water surface over which the wind blows.
Certain other waves, including rogue waves and tsunamis, have different origins.
Wind determines how large a wave can get. However, earthquakes also can create large waves.
