The movement of rocks across Death Valley’s “Racetrack” have yet to be explained by scientists. Decades of study tracking the rocks’ paths (sometimes zig-zagged, sometimes in complete circles), and the fascination of researchers and locals alike have not yielded answers. Some of the rocks weigh as much as 700 pounds. One possible explanation is that rare rains in the Valley lubricate the Racetrack to allow the wind to move the boulders, whose paths are clearly visible.
