What causes stuff to break down faster in compost piles?

A good compost pile combines the right balance of different chemicals and conditions to optimize the decomposition process. Keeping the pile damp and making sure to turn it often to provide adequate oxygen helps speed the process and also making sure to have a balance of carbon and nitrogen. If a compost pile is not tended to properly it will not break down quickly.
