Not a whole lot is known about the seemingly useless appendix, but an appendicitis occurs when the appendix swells and/or becomes infected. This can happen if mucus, feces, or bacteria clog up the appendiceal lumen. Trauma to the abdomen or enlarged lymph tissue in the vicinity can also cause such an infection. The symptoms appear very quickly and are extremely painful. If you do not seek medical attention quick enough they can burst and spread the infection throughout the abdomen.
