Webbed toes are generally hereditary, usually caused by Familiar Syndacty or Down Syndrome, and fairly rare, occuring in 2,000 to 2,500 live births a year. As it’s purely a comsmetic abnormality it usually isn’t considered all that serious. Also, it’s usually only two toes that are stuck together.
The cause is unknown, but sometimes the condition will be familial. When it does occur though, it is because “programmed cell death during gestation is absent or incomplete.”
