Two factors affect the burn rate of candles. The size of the wick has a large impact because longer wicks create larger flames and thus require more fuel (the wax) to burn. The other factor that causes candles to burn at different rates is the type of wax used. Soft waxes burn faster than harder waxes because they have more oil content. High levels of oil within wax lower a candles melting temperature and results in a faster burn rate.
