What causes solar flares to occur in the sun?

A solar flare happens when there is a lot of magnetic energy that is built up and released and causes explosions under the surface of the sun. They happen mostly near sun spots, which are between areas of oppositely directed magnetic fields. The energy from the solar flare is just as much as millions of atomic bombs exploding at the same time.
