Rust is iron oxide. This happens when iron of any type is exposed to air, water, or other materials that have oxidizing properties. On cars, rust builds up because the side panels are generally steel or some iron based metal. If the car paint is rubbed off anywhere, it can expose the metal and moisture in the air over time causes it to rust.
