Quicksand is formed from underground water circulation. The water moves up and down beneath the surface, creating a gel-like viscosity in the sand. However, since the water does not reach the surface, the top looks like normal sand, and it can support very light objects like leaves. Once greater stress is applied, though, the sand can’t support the weight and sinks.
