What causes pink snow?

Pink snow, or “watermelon snow,” is usually caused by the snow algae Chlamydomonas nivalis. This algae contains a bright red carotenoid pigment, which forms the pink color when in the snow. Stepping on it may results in the red color from the carotenoid pigment.
