The pink color in Salmon and Trout comes from carotenoids, a pigment found in beets, carrots, shrimp, algae, and crustaceans(krill and shellfish). While flamingos are pink due to their eating shrimp, Salmon and Trout eat crustaceans with carotenoids and this causes their color. Typically farm-rasied salmon aren’t fed these crustaceans and thus have a kind of grayish hue to their insides.
