What causes the ocean to have different shades of blue?

I’ve noticed it can be dark blue, light blue, and even green or reddish!

The ocean’s color is affected by a few factors. Though water is clear, the ocean appears blue because of the way water absorbs light. White light (or sunlight) contains all the colors of the rainbow, and the ocean scatters blue light the most. Because water is also reflective, sometimes the color of the ocean is a reflection of the sky’s color.

Ocean color is also affected by the organisms in it. For example, phytoplankton blooms can alter the color of the water, and this is most noticeable when observed from a high vantage point.
