Hey there! I’m no scientist but the northen lights, or aurora borealis, are caused when electrically charged particles from the Sun collide with the Earth’s upper atmosphere. So the result is they cause the atmosphere atoms and ions to radiate with different colors and bands of light. They also exist at the South Pole.
Aurora borealis is a result of electrically charged solar particles colliding with gaseous particles of the Earth’s atmosphere. Depending on what type of gas/element the solar particles collide with, the light produced can be a variety of colors including green, purple, red, and yellow. Green light is generally the most common color reported.
