What causes mad cow disease?

Mad cow disease is a degenerative brain disease that affects cattle by deteriorating the spinal chord and brain tissues. The origins of the disease are not known to scientists, however epidemics have been spread due to unhygienic practices by many feeding lots. Often times, the remnants of slaughtered cows are processed and fed back to cattle. If these cows are afflicted, they can easily transmit the disease, which is what has caused many of the mad cow scares in recent years.
