What causes long term damage to land?

There are many different things that can strip the nutrients from land making it unusable. Usually, it is a result of over-farming and use of pesticides. Soil becomes rich through the decomposition of dead matter and earthworms and other life that contribute nutrients that make the soil healthy. But, when land is used to grow too much too often, it strips the nutrients faster than they can be replenished. Pesticides just worsen this by poisoning the land and water beyond repair.
