Large algal blooms are caused by a combination of optimal conditions of high temperature, large amounts of nutrients available, plentiful light, and stable water. There are other unknown causes of large marine blooms that lead to massive fish deaths and closed beaches. Some marine tides occur naturally because of nutrient upwelling that occurs near the coast .
