What causes Islands to break off from each other?

Geological rifts cause microcontinental islands (e.g. Madagascar or New Zealand). A rift is a place where the Earth’s crust shifts to actually move a chunk of land away from a given continent. Most rifts occur along the central axis of a mid-ocean ridge, where new oceanic crust and lithosphere is created along a divergent boundary between two tectonic plates.
