It is caused by a lack of moisture in the skin, having stiff beard hair, having oil in the hair follicles, there being a build up of dead skin cells in the pores and on the surface of the skin, there being coarse curly hair growing, using an improper shaving technique, or using hair removal methods like shaving, waxing, tweezing, or electrolysis.
Ingrown hairs occur when the end of the hair shaft is cut results in a sharped edge that as it grows, curls back into the same hair follicle. This results in an inflammatory response.
