The reason the harvest moon appears so large in the night’s sky is due to an optical illusion. Due to a slightly altered elliptical path, the moon never seems to rise, and appears very large. However you can compare the harvest moon size, close to the horizon, and later in the week when it is high in the night’s sky, and you will see it is the same.
The yellow/orange color has to do with the pollution in the atmosphere. It does give the moon an beautiful color, but unfortunately represents some of the fire smoke and dust in the air.
