What causes species to go extinct other than anthropogenic threats like development and global warming?

Species go extinct when they are no longer adapted to their environment. Other than human impacts, this can happen for a number of reasons. A predator may get more efficient at hunting a species, and cause extinction. Or a species may be outcompeted by another that eats the same types of food. Nevertheless, it is a mistake to underestimate human contribution to current species extinction, as many scientists believe we are causing a mass extinction event, a rate of extinction far larger than the background rate.
