Trees will enter dormancy prior to the onset of freezing or drought conditions. Winter is considered a drought because the freezing temeratures leave the trees unable to collect precipitation from the ground. Therefore, trees in cold climates will enter dormancy in the fall, and emerge in the spring. You can tell a tree is pre dormancy when its leaves begin to change colors and fall off. Not all trees will loose their leaves. Spruce and Pine trees have very tough needles that are resiliant to winter.
