The two factors that cause flash floods are rainfall intensity and duration. A flash flood occurs when there is a sudden rise in water that has no where to go. This could be caused by numerous factors such as blocked drainage systems, rapidly rising creeks or rivers or ice jams. Flash floods can become powerful with a mere six inches of water- strong enough to knock one off their feet. Two feet of water is enough to float a car. Flash floods happen most often at night and are the #1 cause of thunderstorm related deaths each year.
Flash floods are floods that happen very quickly and with little warning. They are very dangerous. A very heavy rain or a calamity like a dam break can cause one.
