“Statistics from CDC show that a vast majority of food-borne disease is associated with cross-contamination and handling later in the distribution chain and in the home.” Basically, the problem arises when produce is being processed and packaged to be sold in stores. Additional reasons could be person-to-person transmission when infected people do not adequately wash their hands and often, produce may become contaminated by E. Coli due to exposure to contaminated water.
