What causes the dorsal fins of whales to curve in captivity?

There are several theories, some thing that since the cartilidge around the fin does not harden until adolescense, which is spent in deep ocean water, that the pressure in the tanks they are kept in is not enough for the fin to stick straight up. The other theory is that since the whale is constantly turning and never swims in a straight line in the tank the fin flops over due to the pressure in turning.
