What causes deer to grow larger antlers?

Antlers, like teeth, are essentially bones that grow externally on the head.  The “velvet” that surrounds the antlers provides them with blood and nutrients.  As is the case with all bone growth, the most important nutrient is calcium.  The amount of calories the deer consumes as well as the level of growth hormone in its body likewise affects the rate of antler growth.
