During photosynthesis leaves are filled with chlorophyl, which gives the leaves their green color. As nights become longer and colder in the fall the photosynthesis stops along with the production of chlorophyl. Left in the leaf are chloroplasts and carotenoids, which give the leaves their fall colors.
