What causes a change to the Earth’s magnetic field?

Why the magnetic field changes and reverses is unknown. It is known that it periodically reverses, but no one even knows when that happens. There is one theory that may explain why the magnetic field changes, but keep in mind that it is just a suggestion. In any case, this theory proposes that the magamatic convection in the deep outer core weakens at times, which destabilizes the dipole. Other theories propose the reason for magnetic field change due to tectonic strain, which is also related to convection patterns deep inside Earth.
