Bunions (abnormal bony bumps at the base of the big toe) form when, over a long period of time, the normal balance of the forces exerted on the foot are disrupted. High-heels, badly fitting shoes, foot injuries, or inherited deformities can cause bunions. Arthritis is also a factor. People in occupations that put a lot of stress on the feet or involve wearing pointed shoes, such as dancers, often develop bunions.
Bunions most commonly affect women due to women wearing more tight-fitting shoes like high-heels and narrow toed shoes. Genetic factors can also be associated with bunion formation.
