When a blood vessel is ruptured blood leaks out and into the surrounding tissues and your body’s response to whatever injury caused the trauma to the blood vessel (s).
A bruise, called a contusion, is the result of broken or damaged blood vessels. Blood that leaks into the surrounding tissue from the damaged vessels results in the raised bump around the site of impact. The bump is also the body’s response to the occurrence. A bruise occurs after an impact to the skin, such as something hitting it or running into something.
