What causes blackouts?

Blackouts can be caused by a number of different things. The most common is when power is cutoff from the power source. This can happen if a wire goes down, a transformer blows, power plant malfunctions, etc. any number of things that would cut off the source of the power. Secondly, extreme drops in voltage, the amount of power coming in can cause a power outage, creating a general dimming effect. Lastly, the most common form, dropouts, occur when the power absorbed drops out (usually for about a second). They are hardly noticeable and quite common, especially in areas with older infrastructure.
