What causes the black streaks in glaciers?

The black streaks are called medial moraines and come about when two glaciers collide to form a larger glacier. The moraines are rock debris left behind when the glaciers run into each other.

Moraines in glaciers also develop along the sides, where rock and debris falls from adjacent outcrops onto the ice. When the glacier melts, the sediment is left behind as a lateral moraine.
