What causes the big currents in the ocean?

There are two types of currents. Surface currents are caused by movement of air (wind). Deeper currents are by difference in water temperatures and water density across long distances. Warmer water has an inherently higher pressure and density, and will naturally move to cooler (lower-pressure and lower-density) areas.
