What causes avalanches?

    Avalanches are caused by a combination of terrain and weather. Snowfall, weather and temperature change, and wind direction are factors, though avalanches occur when these factors are combined with conditions such as slope angle and orientation, terrain, and vegetation (or rather, lack of vegetation).
