What causes aurorae?

Aurora phenomena also known as the northern lights are caused by the solar wind generated from our sun. When charged particles are released from the sun as they always are, these hit the upper atmosphere section known as the ionosphere and generates the lights in the sky as the aurora. These charged particles react with the ions in the ionosphere and excite electrons and release photons which are light particles.
