What caused the Sahelian droughts of the 1960s-1980s?

It is a very voltile climate, being between the Sahara and more tropical regions. It typically only recieves between 4-8 inches of precipitation per year, and is hard to sustain agriculture there even in good year. This is why development is slow and old ways prevail. There are many possible causes for the drought, including increased use of natural resources there, lack of vegetation, and rising ocean temperatures, though no one is sure of the real reason.
