Assuming you mean the floods in January (somewhat recent), the heavy rains were caused by two extreme weather phenomena converging on Australia. La Nina, which usually occurs seasonally when Australia’s Atlantic ocean interacts with the earth’s atmosphere, combined with monsoonal low pressure which annually brings heavy rains to the region. Typically these two occurances are not connected but in the case of these floods the two happened to coincide.
