What caused the Great Potato Famine?

The poor of Ireland had come to depend on potatoes as their main dietary staple because it was the only affordable way to feed a family. The potato disease known as “blight” came to Ireland and wiped out significant portions of the potato crop several years in a row. If so many people hadn’t depended so heavily on potatoes for the bulk of their diet, it would not have been so devastating.
