What caused the drop in cars in the United States in 2009?

2009 was the worst year for the car industry since the 60s.  The cause of this is largely blamed on the recession and the subsequent tightening of credit markets.  Several companies simply stopped making cars altogether because they werent selling enough to cover the costs of staying open.  This caused many of the automobile stimulus packages you saw last year.
