What is a carbon sink?

A carbon sink is a reservoir for carbon, a place where carbon accumulates, it can be either natural or manmade.  The ocean is the largest carbon sink on the planet, large forests are also another example of carbon sinks.  Humans can contribute to carbon sinks by helping forests grow and planting new vegetation.  Carbon sinks are part of the natural carbon cycle and help regulate the amount of carbon in the atmosphere.  They have become of particular importance in the present day with the influx of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
