20% of green house gases in the U.S. are a result of heating and cooling homes. However, it depends on the region and weather when it comes to the size of the carbon footprint. In colder regions 2/3 of household energy bills are caused by heating. In warmer regions the air conditioning in a typical household can produce a carbon footprint of 6000 pounds of CO2 equivalent per year.
