No one has calculated the footprint of the American music industry, but the UK music industry emits 540,000 tons of CO2 a year. According to a study, 43% of emissions came from audience travel, 26% from recording and publishing, and 23% from live venue shows.

In the U.S., a group of prominent musicicans including the Dave Matthews Band, Bonnie Raitt, and The Roots, have formed the Green Music Group. The Group is dedicated to helping musicians reduce their carbon emissions and overall environmental impact. There is a similar group in the UK called Julie’s Bicycle.
