According to the EPA, Americans toss out around 25 billion cups of Styrofoam each year. The problem with disposing Styrofoam is that it is incredibly difficult to recycle, mainly because the chemicals that make up it take an extremely long time to break down. According to an article, “even 500 years from now, the foam coffee cup you used this morning will be sitting in a landfill.”
It’s especially difficult to recycle Styrofoam locally, because of its bulk. The best thing we can do is to simply avoid buying these products altogether. There are a few dropsites that will accept it, but you really have to search for them. A very useful trick you can do to break down Styrofoam is to spray it with an organic citrus peel extract that will actually shrink it significantly. Otherwise it’s best to simply stay away from buying Styrofoam.
